Untitled Poem

by Dr. Thorneycroft Huxtable, M.A., Ph.D., etc.

The college man Holmes moping and melancholy devises
the deductive science within the gloom of his college rooms.
The college man Holmes boxes and fences but with "no points
of contact" returns to the solitary gloom of his college rooms.

Then the collegiate Watson appears keeping not bull pup
but bull terrier, one that claims Holmes with a fortnight bite!
Then the collegiate Watson appears, hearty and full blooded,
but friendless as a man sent home from a nation's faraway fight.

The friend--the actor's audience--galvanizes college man Holmes.
And his theory becomes his practice in the Saga's first mystery,
as together the pair travel to Donnithorpe in Norfolk, Holmes
and Trevor, who played the very first Watson in all of history.
